Switch from PC to Mac – the silence

Mac MiniStill can’t believe how quiet the mac mini is. Just awesome! On the downside I’ve only managed a couple of hours a week to stroke my new machine due to family general grind and that has been taken up with updates!

There should be an update embargo for the first week or so when you buy a new product so you can play without interruption. Do I really need that fix for iPhoto that makes it work with the latest and greatest canon that I won’t be able to afford in my lifetime (apologies if you are that user)….oh no it comes with a security patch….that must mean there is a great big hole that I need to fill…..update update update! Just to go off topic slightly…updates are even appearing on modern electrical goods. Turn on the TV for the first time. No no no, don’t think about watching your new TV straight away….you need the latest and greatest version .00543 and 20 minutes later you turn tv back on and off…to the then get a notice that there are new channels to be added. I’m just dreading the day the washing machine is wifi enabled and there is a security hole that needs fixing in case your white pants come out pink. I make lite of the whole update thing only because that’s been my main focus and I really do want them, and without them how would we get the latest tweaks.

So like a bunny caught between headlights I’ve been upgrading between eating breakfast when the kids are busy getting ready for school and starting to look at my iTunes migration when the kids have gone to bed!

I’m also a Spotify user and this downloaded no problem. Went straight to importing my local files which annoyed me. Easily fixed in preferences.

Apple Super drive…..hmmm. I gave this a shot this week as well, very neat and looked great next to my monitor, but the USB cable supplied is a joke in terms of length. Also not happy with the noise……I’m started to sound like a noise freak now. I turned my PC on once (it’s normally on constantly so I’m used to the din!), I thought there was a small hurricane coming in! Anyway the noise of the drive detracted from my Apple experience which is a shame. I’m also not a fan of the no eject button….I know I know….why would you want to quickly press a button when you could locate finder and then a few track and mouse clicks later get the computer to eject it!

This weekend….more iTunes migration planned…..we’ll see.

Switch from PC to Mac – its in the bag

Parcels

Wow…..I’m sitting here both excited and daunted…and amazed….and scared…and in awe.  I am typing away on my new mac mini……but lets rewind.  As you’ll remember from yesterdays scribble….I decided to buy a mac.  So at 2pm I dutifully turned up at the collection point at the store wondering whether the John Lewis delivery service was as good as they were making out.  Would I have had a wasted journey?  Two people came in after me and had been given there wares, my man hadn’t returned so I was getting quite anxious! …but not to worry he returned with two packages.  The last time I’d been to collection point was for some lego and in came in a huge box so I was looking forward to seeing how the mac mini would arrive.

Just as I got through the door I received a text to say my parcels were ready to pickup! Ha Ha….I have them here. So then I decide to pleasure delay and give my humble desk a much needed detox, hoover and dust. I ripped all the wires out the back of the pc and decided this was the right time to start a new!

4 hours later as a treat I start to unpack. I new I was in for a treat…but not sure how much. I was not disappointed.

The Weigh In

I thought I’d have a bit of a weigh in.  David and Goliath!  and then the opening….

Mac Mini

Amazing little box doesn’t do it justice, it just oozes beauty.  I wasn’t sure if I wanted to turn it on.  That would confirm the new world I was entering into.

The box came with 2 leads, the power lead and a dvi to hdmi adapter…the game was on.  I was just about to turn it on when I realised I hadn’t opened  the keyboard and the trackpad in my excitement…..at this point I noticed the wording on the keyboard box, setup with existing keyboard!  Fortunately I ignored this and turned the Mac on. Both keyboard and trackpad registered with the mac within seconds. The walk through was pretty slick and pain free. The only thing that threw me was whether to enter a password and whether I to join iCloud, that window is still up.

So to recap, I have a mac mini, which I’ve plugged into the DVI connector (using the supplied adapter and my old pc monitor cable). Along with Bluetooth keyboard and trackpad.  I was up and running within 10 mins. I also forgot to plug in the router, which I did mid way through at the prompt for wifi, clicked back and then next and it seamlessly carried on.

I can’t believe how quiet it is!….and the sleep setting, amazing. My wife has just come in and said the room even smells better….I said it’s the apple smell they pump it out into the room!!

Switch from PC to Mac the Purchase!

I didn’t sleep very well last night. One of those things that happen for me every 5 years or so was about to happen, A new computer purchase. It dawned on me at the turn of the year when I was looking out a receipt for something that it had been a long time since my central PC had been upgraded, there’d been the odd the hard drive, a new power unit and a windows 7 install along the way. A net book had been slipped in for travel use and inadvertently left to collect dust when the iPad 2 came along.

I’m pretty good at understanding the ebbs and flows of new technology….either that or I’m slow to catch on. The IPad 1 didn’t entice me…I wanted to see how it caught on, along with the flash debate. Then there is my iPhone, I still have a 3GS with the version 3 skipping me by (was there a 1-2?). So yesterday….I don’t know what possessed me, perhaps the subliminal messages in The Steve Jobs book I’d just finished! I got up and thought that’s it….no more procrastination it’s time for something new, I don’t have the patience to wait out for a new iMac (I would be so upset to pay out that money to see it replaced by a shinier bullet proof screen)…let’s try the mac mini. See if it fits my computing life style which has gone more consumer centric as I’ve got older……..but I long for some coding and new learning.

So after the long wait….I went into the store yesterday discussed my fears of moving to the MAC from the PC, would the monitor plug in. What’s the story with no DVD player? Can you upgrade the memory? Etc etc. Then the killer question…do you have it in stock! To my dismay no….do you know how long I’ve been waiting…..5 years for this……I was just about to start crying when he told me that I could order on-line and they would have it in the next day even for a Sunday. Great I thought a little more thinking time….to double check I’m doing the right thing…..more excitement around the agonising.

So Sunday morning……I’m sat in the room we dump all the office related stuff in the house. It’s also has the window I use to start the seeds off. I’m thinking about how do I bring this new baby into the house. I can hear the fan of the PC above the noise of the boys and I’m wondering will that become a silent whisper…or silence. I’m thinking how to detox the desk, when am I going to get time to detox the desk…..I’ll want to plug it in and drool.

I’m away to check my phone for any text’s from the store and to find a duster!
